Wise Growth (Sustainability)
Preserving the past, enjoying the present, securing the future
Sustainable destination management is the balance between the demands of our visitors, the industry, local community and the environment. The partnership deals with the common issues, sourcing and sharing information and avoiding duplication of effort.
Its aims are:
- Conserve our unique natural and cultural heritage
- Improve transport infrastructure
- Encourage community involvement
- Think globally, act locally
As a recently identified role, work is currently underway to establish connections, practical solutions and advice that can usefully be harnessed and offered out to the tourism industry to foster sustainable growth in the sub-region.
The Sustainability Group is made up of representatives from local authorities, Environmental Agencies, industry representatives, the Green Globe Organisation and SW Tourism and Tourism South East to ensure a consistent approach to sustainable development in the region. Work includes the creation of a set of wise growth indicators, training and accreditation schemes as well as addressing visitor management, planning and transportation issues.
The Group liaises and works closely with other schemes in the region, including SWT's work to create a region wide 'sustainable' accreditation scheme, based on the South Hams scheme. The aim is identify pilot 'hot-spots' to gauge the potential success of the scheme. Within the Dorset New Forest sub-region, the Jurassic Coast has been chosen by SWT as one such hot-spot. A modified and more user friendly version of the Green Audit Kit forms its basis and work will be dealt Sustainable Tourism Forum, the regional branch of which is attended by both contacts below.
